Your house often gives you subtle clues that something is amiss. Keep an eye (and ear) out for these common warning signs:

  • An Unexplained Jump in Your Water Bill: If your water usage habits haven’t changed but your bill has suddenly spiked, a leak is the most likely culprit.
  • The Sound of Running Water: Do you hear water running even when all the taps and appliances are off? That’s a major red flag.
  • Damp or Musty Smells: A persistent musty odor, especially in basements or bathrooms, often indicates hidden moisture and potential mold growth from a slow leak.
  • Visible Damage: Look for water stains on ceilings or walls, bubbling or peeling paint, and warped floorboards.
  • Low Water Pressure: A sudden drop in water pressure throughout your home could mean that water is escaping somewhere in your plumbing system.

Your First Line of Defense: The Water Meter Test

Think you might have a leak but can’t see it? You can perform a simple test using your home’s water meter. It’s a surprisingly effective way to confirm a hidden problem.

  1. Turn Everything Off: Make sure no water is being used inside or outside your home. This means no showers, no dishwasher, no washing machine, and no sprinklers.
  2. Find Your Water Meter: It’s usually located in a box near the street or sometimes on the side of your house.
  3. Check the Leak Indicator: Most meters have a small triangle, dial, or wheel that spins when water is flowing. If this indicator is moving, you’ve definitely got a leak.
  4. Note the Reading: If your meter doesn’t have a leak indicator, write down the numbers on the meter. Wait for an hour (without using any water!) and check the numbers again. If they’ve gone up, water is flowing somewhere.

When to Call in the Experts

While the meter test can confirm a leak, it won’t tell you where it is. If the leak isn’t obvious (like a dripping tap), it’s time to call a professional.
