Kiwi Rail

01 December 2023

KiwiRail embarked on the construction of a state-of-the-art rail mechanical facility at its Waltham yard in Christchurch, aimed at bolstering its South Island operations. The Waltham Mechanical Hub serves as a central maintenance facility for locomotives, passenger carriages, and wagons, consolidating operations from multiple sites into a modern, purpose-built hub. With the addition of 47 new low-emission locomotives to its fleet, KiwiRail aimed to enhance the resilience and efficiency of its operations through this project.

Foleys' Involvement

Foleys played a vital role as a subcontractor in this project, collaborating closely with the main contractor, Calder Stewart and KiwiRail to deliver essential hydraulic, water waste, compressed air, and trade waste solutions. Leveraging its industry-trained professionals, we provided comprehensive design and installation services tailored to KiwiRail's requirements, ensuring cohesion and efficiency throughout the project lifecycle.

Client Objectives

KiwiRail sought to upgrade its existing mechanical facilities to meet the evolving needs of its operations. By engaging Foleys and the main contractor, Calder Stewart, KiwiRail aimed for a seamless transition from design to completion, mitigating coordination risks and ensuring cost-effective and efficient project delivery.

Challenges and Solutions

Our expertise helped overcome various technical challenges, including managing different ground levels and addressing contaminated ground issues. By implementing stainless steel solutions and optimising design specifications, we ensured the longevity and functionality of the building, contributing to the overall success of the project.

Value Added by Foleys

Through collaboration, timely decision-making, and leveraging the latest trade knowledge and materials, Foley's added significant value to the project. Our proactive approach, combined with top-quality project management, ensured that the project was delivered on time, within budget, and met KiwiRail's expectations.

Contractor Engagement and Relationship Management

Foley's approach prioritised clear communication, transparency, and collaboration with the client and other stakeholders. By fostering a relationship built on trust and reliability, we established ourselves as a preferred partner for future projects, emphasizing the importance of long-term collaboration beyond a single job.

Conclusion

Our involvement in the Waltham Mechanical Hub project underscores our commitment to excellence and innovation in mechanical infrastructure development. By delivering high-quality solutions that met client objectives and surpassed expectations, Foleys continues to play a crucial role in shaping the future of transportation infrastructure in New Zealand.

"We are extremely proud of this project, and Foleys has been a huge part of that. On behalf of Calder Stewart and the site team, I would like to pass on our thanks and appreciation to Foleys for all the extra efforts, collaboration, and attention to detail that has contributed to the final result."
